Last year we took a look at 2011 Topps & Bowman Case prices at years end. I got some feedback that prices during the release date window or 'peak' selling season might give a more accurate reflection of the kind of profit you can make. So I've added both the 4 weeks after release High/Low prices & the December year end prices.

At the time of writing this, some sets had only been out for about a month, so the data only reflects the release date window prices.

Remember that even modest profits above do not reflect costs of doing business. From what I've heard, getting an eBay Power Seller Discount is often the difference between making money and loosing money for some sellers.

2011 Topps Chrome Football Checklist

Colin Kaepernick grew up in Turlock, CA where I used to live. It's low key in Turlock. Could probably leave your door unlocked depending where you lived. It's a far cry from the bright lights of the NFL. In 2011, as a rookie, Kaepernick watched Alex Smith lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. Smith's cards exploded in value, and it was hard for anyone to think he'd lose his job the following season. People close to the 49ers organization loved Kaepernick though, with his blend of size, speed and a rocket arm. Smith played fairly well in the first half of the 2012 season, but got knocked out of a game due to a concussion and Kaepernick has played and started every game since. Collectors who bought Kaepernick cards during 2011 and even the start of 2012 were rewarded if they decided to sell once Smith went out with injury. Most of Kaepernick's football cards have gone up in value, even the more common ones, and his autographed versions like the Topps Chrome have seen a good pop.

One of the limitations with looking at Kaepernick's card values - and stopping at December 31, 2012 - is that it won't track the 2012 NFL playoffs in January. Depending what happens there, it could boost or level off the market for his cards. Barring disaster, Kaepernick looks like a lock to be the 49ers starter in 2013 and beyond. Even at the prices his 2011 Topps Chrome Refractor Autograph are selling for at years end (roughly $175), it still feels like there is room to grow potentially in 2013 if he plays well. But that could be the Turlock bias setting in.....

For a 12 month period we looked at the value of Mike Trout's 2009 Bowman Sterling Autograph. Each of the 90 sales we tracked were for a graded BGS (Beckett Grading Services) 9.5, with a 10 score on the autograph grade. 9.5 is a GEM Mint Score and the 10 is a typical grade for modern autographs. Before Mike Trout was called up on April 28, 2012 copies of the card could be had for less then $80.00. Once Trout got it going good luck finding one for less then $275.00. Trout is a remarkable player who has a skill set very few major league players have. Power, speed, defense, bat control, he could be a MVP contender for many years to come.

In 2009 the cards didn't come graded. You'd pull the Bowman Sterling Mike Trout card out of a pack, and then collectors will send them in to get graded. As of December 21, 2012 - 329 had been graded 9.5 by BGS according to their population report. 26 Bowman Sterling Autograph Mike Trout's have been graded BGS 10, or a Pristine score. Those are very rare and are worth a premium over the 9.5. He also has rare parallels in Bowman Sterling that are also autographed (black refractor, gold refractor for example) and those are worth more then the base autograph tracked on this page.
