2010 Topps Update Peak Performance Stephen Strasburg Autograph #PPA-SS

Stephen Strasburg cards are still selling for good money despite having season ending surgery that will keep him out of baseball for at least 18 months. Its not like his career is over by any means, being young and talented I’m sure Strasburg will come back strong.

I remember this time last year seeing most Tim Lincecum Autographs sell for a little less than $100 – after winning 2 Cy Young Awards. Winning the world series, and not having too many current autographs on the market has turned that all around. However Tim Lincecum’s World Series Win goes to show you what the market will pay for a top performing pitcher … even when things are going good.

Basically I think that between $80 – $90 is what the market will pay over time for a top pitching talent not on the Yankees or Red Sox (or other huge market team). Given that even if all goes well Strasburg will be just starting to pitch again this time next year. Not to mention you have Aroldis Chapman, Bryce Harper, even Buster Posey and other SF Giants taking the spotlight (and collectors dollars) away from Strasburg, I have to think his prices will fall. We will also see the release of 2010 Bowman Chrome and 2010 Topps Sterling Baseball, which will flood the market with more Stephen Strasburg 2010 (RC) Cards.

I said on show #65 of The Sports Card Show Podcast that if these are selling for these prices next year, I’ll buy 5 boxes of this stuff and give away the cards for free. We’ll see if I regret that call!!
