February 2011 E-Mail Questions
Question: I have a 2009 John Elway TTR-90 10/18 and have not been able to find any info on this card. Even the Topps web site itself does not itemize this list. At least not that I have found. Can you help me find this complete checklist and also to find info on this specific card?
Answer: I’m leaning toward the Sepia (Brownish) version which Beckett has listed as serial numbered #/15. I’ve seen some copies of the Red – it looks like it might go by the color on the “bottom stripe” where the HOF jersey is. I’m still not 100% sure, but I’ll keep looking to try and find pics of every card except the gold.
Beckett could very well just have that as a mistake on their site – they get the info from Topps back in 2009 – so perhaps Topps ended up with a few more Elway jersey cards then they initially thought and didn’t pass the correct info over to Beckett. I will continue to look into finding pictures and let you know what I find out.
Question: Do you know if there will be a National Treasures Basketball for 2011 or is Gold Standard replacing it?
Answer: I believe there will be National Treasures Basketball – Gold Standard is a new product… possibly replacing Studio or Court Kings. My guess is that NT will come out after the season as last year was around August when it finally released.
Hope that helps, I haven’t seen any info on it, but last years set was huge for Panini – and I’m sure they want to build on it this year.
Question: I would like to know the difference between a retail box and a Hobby box.And what would be the best to by between both?
Answer: Thanks for the e-mail, that’s a good question. The traditional definition is Hobby Boxes can be purchased at Card Shops & ‘Hobby’ Stores, where Retail boxes are purchased Target, Wal-Mart & other ‘Retail’ stores that sell a bit of everything.
Now you can usually find retail & hobby boxes online – but you’ll never see a ‘hobby’ box sold at Target or Wal-Mart.
Retail packs tend to have harder odds to hit the autographs/jersey cards. There are some 1/1 hits that only make it into hobby boxes, where Retail will sometimes have a special insert or manufactured patch card.
If you are strictly looking for ‘base’ cards or non-autographed & jersey cards – retail is not a bad way to get cards. If you are looking for Autographs and other big hits on a regular basis — you should just save up a little more money and buy the hobby box.
Also, hobby boxes sometimes move up/down in price based on collectors interest, where retail product hardly ever goes on sale.
Hope that helps!
Question: Can you tell me or help me find out more info about this card I pulled out of a Jumbo Box the other day. Its a 2010 Topps Football Emmanuel Sanders Rookie Premiere Auto in “RED INK” why does mine serial #5/9 in Gold on the front of the card? On your site it says that the “RED INK” 2010 Rookie Premiere Auto’s are #/10.
Answer: Nice card! I’ve seen other 2010 Topps Red Ink Auto’s that are #’rd to #/10 – for some reason, looks like Emmanuel Sanders only has #/9. I believe these cards are signed in person at the Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot – perhaps Sanders messed up on one of the cards – or one became damaged before the pack-out – and thus they only were able to put 9 into the set. Thanks for emailing me – I will be sure to make note of that on my site.
Question:I recently opened a pack of 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter and inside was a Henry Hudson Sailors of the Seven Sea card. But the right top corner has the factory cutter blade marks and the roller marks on it. Is this a rare find and how much would it be worth. See picture.
Answer: Thanks for the e-mail – that’s an interesting card, but not all to particularly valuable, especially last season when Topps had many issues similar to this. Most collectors send these back to Topps for a replacement (if you have lots of them I guess)
While it is rare, on today’s market – it doesn’t carry any significant value over a regular card – and in most cases, it devalues the card. Its possible the trend reverses, but with it being something that could be faked, I don’t see that likely.
Thanks for sending me the picture of the card, you normally see them straight across the top where they press the packs together for sealing, but that one looks like it came off the roller.
Best of luck with your collection, thanks for the e-mail.
January 2011 E-Mail Questions
Question: Hello, I have a Derek Jeter autograph card from Four Sport 1992 Draft Pick Classic. I would like to know how much it is today on the market. Its in mint shape.
Answer: The Jeter card you have is serial numbered /1125 on the front. A BGS graded 9.5 sold and the bidding got to $407.00. Because your card is un-graded I would say it’s worth anywhere from $150-350.
Question: Hey guys i was wandering what you thought of World Class Grading as a company?
Answer: Can’t say that I heard of World Class Grading. There are many smaller services out there – the ones that are the most trusted in the industry, for better or worse, are PSA and BGS. Often times BGS and PSA are the way to go when grading because that is what the “buyer” trusts the most.
If you are looking to just hold onto your cards and not re-sell them – then I would by all means look into smaller grading operations because at the very least you are getting a nice holder for your card. Their pricing is in line with the other card graders on the market but – I’d probably wait or go with PSA or BGS until they establish themselves in the business if you are looking to re-sell cards that you grade.
Question: How do i find upcoming card shows in my area – California?
Answer: I have been trying to update our 2011 Baseball Card Show Schedule on a daily/weekly basis. I am always keeping an eye out for big and small shows to add to the page. Keep checking back and I’ll do my best to find them!
Question: I have a question about the Bucks list of players from 2009-10 Panini Adrenalyn in the game book. They have Salim Stoudamire listed but I have not been able to find his card. The set of 300 base cards that I have includes Charlie Bell but he is not listed in the base set in the game book. Can you tell me the correct player for the Bucks complete set? Thanks!!!
Answer: Here is the complete list of Bucks players in the 09-10 Adrenalyn Game:

Question: I’m looking for a 1925 Zeenut Reggie Rawlings card. Can you suggest possible sources?
Answer: Some of these old cards can be very tough to track down and sometimes you can pay a premium if you go through an online dealer. I would suggest setting up an item alert on eBay so that it emails you anytime a Zeenut Reggie Rawlings card gets listed on the site.
A 1925 Zeenut Reggie Rawlings card sold for $19.00 on December 13, 2010. These cards do pop up from time to time so you’ll want to keep checking back to see if any other cards get put up for sale.
Question: I’m looking to buy my fiance a Hank Aaron 1954 rookie card rated PSA 5 or preferrably 6. Do you currently have any available or know who I could try to get in contact with?
Answer: We do not sell cards on our site but there are many resources available to pick up a Hank Aaron 1954 Topps RC card on the web. Back in March we chronicled the value of several PSA graded Hank Aaron rookie cards and the price range for a PSA 5-6 is $600-1,300. Once again, eBay would be your best source if you wanted to get one quickly as many are for sale currently:
Question: I recently purchased a box of 2001 Bowman Chrome Baseball with the intent of never opening. After doing some research I discovered that the Albert Pujols Auto Rookie was a redemption card? So you can’t pull the actual card out of a pack? Please let me know if this is correct. Thanks!
Answer: Yes, it is my understanding that the ’01 Albert Pujols was a redemption card that expired on June 30th, 2003. Most people are unaware of this and I only learned about the card being a redemption about 2 years ago. The Ichiro English and Japan cards are also redemptions.
Question: I have a few cards that I’d like to know prices on. If you could help out please let know!
2010 Eli Manning Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade. It’s the Black Spectrum parallel I believe but it is just really different. It’s serial numbered 2/10 It has his autograph and has a piece of jersey. Nothing special about that but the piece of jersey is white with what looks like it has a part of an autograph on it. I obviously compared the auto on card to the piece of jersey but it doesn’t look like any part of his own.
2008 Ladanian Tomlinson Upper Deck Football Heroes serial numbered one of one. Black background.
2010 Dan Marino Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade. Three jerseys but no autograph. The first is a small jersey… could possibly be a sock or something. The material is different. The second is a small patch 3 color and the third I think is from his shoe. It is white with what it looks like a yellow ironed screen print. Serial numbered 14/50.
2008 Absolute Memorabilia RPM Jonathan Stewart. It’s serial numbered 13/15. It has a small patch on the top right. The auto is on a silver glossy part taking up most of the card and has the Panters logo stamped on it. I have a Jake Long exactly like it serial numberd to 15 as well.
One of my most different cards. It’s a printing plate of Reggie White from the 1994 Collectors edge set. It says “Sir Reggie White” on it. It’s the print from the back of the card.
I hope you can offer me some help!
Answer: These should give you an idea about a ‘floor’ price – and if someone offers you more – I’d consider it a fair offer…just depends on how much value you place on the card going forward as well. Hope this helps.
2010 Dan Marino Absolute Memorbilia Tools of the Trade – saw a 2 Patch
– with nothing too special sell for around $15 #/50, a 4 color dual
Patch went for $20+. Considering the Prime pieces might be a little
better than average, I’d say on eBay $25 – $33. Trade value to a
Marino fan, probably closer to $40.
2010 Eli Manning Playoff Absolute – sounds like you have a piece
where there was some markings – sometimes this is done by the player,
sometimes by staff who for some reason needed to mark that item.
Sometimes I’ve seen it for sizing, or identifying that those were
Eli’s game pants, … or possibly a superstition that he might have by
writing something … I’ve seen/heard some different reasons.
Typically if it were a signature, the company would use it – however
it does make the card slightly more collectible compared to other
versions. I’m just going to totally guess on a price – Its probably
only slightly more valuable … possibly 1.5x what a ‘normal’ #/10
patch Autograph would go for. If its a sticker autograph – on eBay I’d
say $87 – $98 …. on-card auto $100+ — Trade value $100+ and sold at
the right time (NY making playoff run) you could maybe get $150 for
something like this if Eli was hot….mainly because he’s in NY.
2008 Ladanian Tomlinson – this is the kind of card – if you have an
online store you put $75 on it and take offers. There are certainly LT
fans who want this – just not that much more over some of his other
cards. I think at auction you could get $20 for it…trade I’d take
2008 Absolute Memorabilia RPM Jonathan Stewart – there is a guy who is
selling #1/10 for $100 or best offer on eBay – its not exactly the
same version but similar. No reserve auction – I’d say it would sell
for $28 – $36 … it’d sell better towards the beginning of seasons as
he usually has some fantasy hype. Trade – $40+ … just because there
is some potential for growth.
Thanks again for the e-mail – feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Question: Do you have a checklist on your site that identifies the parallel/variant cards in the 2010 Topps Update Baseball set?
Answer: I have listed the ones I know of at the bottom of our 2010 Topps Update Baseball checklist page – its possible there are more.
Question: I have few 2010 Razor Cut Signature Edition cards. I have been wonder The famous film producer Louis B. Mayer, 1 of 1. How much it is worth? I have it. I need to know…
Answer: Hello thanks for the email. I cannot give you an exact price because it’s a 1/1 and only after it’s sold will you know.
You can compare it to others, someone is trying to get about $900 for a similar one on eBay MYSTERY CUTS AUTOGRAPH CUT AUTO: LOUIS B MAYER 1/1
Dealers and card store owners would probably give you $150 – $200, collectors of his will pay more. Hope this helps. In the future compare 1/1 cards to others on eBay to give you an idea of what it might sell for. Hope that helps.
Question: I have been collecting Sweet Spot Upper Deck 2010 Football. Actually went a bit crazy and am trying to put a complete set together. I just bought Dan Marino signatures 1 of 3. After buying it (haven’t received it yet), but I compared the eBay picture with the one of the same card you posted Dan Marino sweet spot 2010 1 of 3. The signatures although both look like Dan Marino signatures are in different spots on the helmet, clearly different cards. Any idea how this may be possible, where did you get the picture of the card from? Puzzled. The eBay seller has many transactions with a perfect rating and states the card is original. Any ideas?
Answer: Great question – and thanks for the email. The photos I have are from the early promotion of the set. The Dan Marino in particular was one of the first photos released of the set originally I believe in February 2010. I’m guessing that is good Photoshop work or they used a different helmet for the card once the product came out many months later. Without checking the auction, I can be almost certain you are getting the real thing. Real photos tend to be a bit blurry because the helmet sits off the scanner so I left the stock photos up for most cards because they look a little nicer.
Hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions.
Question: I have two different Stephen Strasburg 2010 Topps #661 cards. what do you know?
Answer: There are 3 total variations of the #661 Stephen Strasburg Card.
1) The Million Card Redemption Code Version
2) 2010 Topps Factory Set Version
3) 2010 Topps Update Baseball Version
Here are pictures of all three cards: 2010 Topps Series 2 Stephen Strasburg #661 (RC) Redemption

Considering Chris hasn’t done too much in his career to set him apart
from the many players that have played the game, the value would be
small – probably around what the non-signed ball costs in a store.
That’s not to say it won’t have higher value in the future – as it
appears he just made it back to the MLB last season. You never know
what a player might do.
Hope that helps, best of luck with your collection.
Question: serial-numbered cards
If a card has a serial number of, say, 20/55, does that really mean that there were only 55 of that particular card ever made?
Thank you very much,
Thanks for the e-mail and listening to the show!
Great question, in general – yes, a card #20/55 is 1 of only 55 cards made of that particular card.
There are usually things like Green, Red, Black (or similar breakdowns) of Parallel Cards that are all serial numbered to various amounts … so in a way many cards have several variations of serial numbering…but not always.
I would say that Rookie Cards, autographs, patches/jersey cards, and very low serial number (less than about 20) cards tend to be more collectible than standard inserts/base with a serial # – however as time goes on, the mid-90’s serial ## cards sell fairly well.
This question is often asked about Printing Plates, which are usually #1/1 but have 4 color variations for each card. Some collectors look at this (and spend money accordingly) as if its #1/4 – others do not.
Hope that helps, be on the lookout for the jersey number in the card – for example anything Kobe Bryant #24/xxx is sometimes more collectible as well.
Let me know if you have any further questions, best of luck in the hobby,
I am looking to sell 700 Football Card lot
Mixed lot some duplicates No sleeves some rookies cards are in Good Condition
Thanks for the e-mail. I’d try Craigslist or something like that in your area. Try to include as much detail as you can in your description – and/or lots of pictures. I personally don’t collect cards myself – I just enjoy talking about them! Good luck with your sale.
Hope that helps
I am starting to become interested in this and I am a 53 year old grandmother with no knowledge…can you tell me how to redeem a code?
Thanks for the e-mail, I’m thinking you are referring to Topps Attax
or Panini Adrenalyn Football codes?
If so – you will want to create an account on these official websites:
Once you are registered there is a place on those websites where you
I hope that helps get you started. There are also packs of cards sold at Target, Wal-Mart and other similar retailers …where you buy 1 pack for 1.00 and get 5 – 6 code cards.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Is 2010 Bowman Chrome Baseball supposed to come out today October 10th or is there a delay?
Thanks for the e-mail – I have it coming out November 3 – it was delayed possibly because Topps Chrome Baseball came out later than it was supposed to as well.
Here is our release date calendar that I try to update a few times a week:
Hi, can you please tell me what the above card (2009 Topps Allen & Ginter Scott Rolen Relic) is worth? The relic is a piece of cloth. – CB
Hello, thanks for the question.
Just going off what they have sold for recently on eBay – I’ve seen most sell over the last month for about $4 – $6 total (including shipping)
Those are just eBay prices – if you find a Scott Rolen fan or if you had a card store – you could probably sell it for $8 – $10 … but obviously its harder to do that.
Hope that helps, thanks for the e-mail.
HELP! Everywhere I look for the (2010 Topps Heritage) Chrome Checklist, I see C1 thru C100.
On ebay I discovered items #d C101 thru C148. If this a fact, or fiction?
Thx – RP
Thanks for the e-mail – this is a fact – but they are found in the recently released 2010 Topps Chrome Baseball. You will find a complete checklist of cards C101 – C150 Here: 2010 Topps Chrome Baseball Checklist
Hope this helps! Thanks again for the e-mail. Let me know if I can help you further.
Hi, is there an update to this checklist (2010 Topps Triple Threads Baseball). There are a lot of TBD entries. Also on the list of Auto Relic cards Tom Seaver is listed. I’ve been looking for this card on ebay several times a day since the set came out. It has not shown up. Did topps cancel this card? I know Seaver has been doing less Auto’s lately. There were no Seaver autograph cards in the ’09 & ’10 Tribute series. So if thinking maybe this card was never released. I’ve left messages with topps directly, but they yet to call me back. Thank you for you help. – JM
There is no Tom Seaver Autograph within the set – I believe the card was canceled. I noticed a few other cards that were canceled including a 1 that I have pictured.
I’m done updating the checklist and you can find it here: 2010 Topps Triple Threads Baseball
Thanks again for the e-mail. Let me know if you have any more questions.
