Sports Trading Card Price Tracker We talk a lot about price movement of single cards and sports trading card boxes on The Sports Card Show Podcast. Each month we'll pick some hot items in the sports card world and monitor the price action over the month. Sometimes we make prediction on if the price is going to go up or down.

Blake Griffin's 2009/10 NBA rookie season got off on the wrong foot when he got injured in the pre-season and missed the entire regular season. Prices for his Panini rookie cards slipped below those of Tyreke Evans and Stephen Curry - who both had spectacular rookie seasons. Smart collectors were buying Griffin with the hopes he could come back in 10/11 and produce in a big way.
One of the more plentiful jersey autograph rookie cards of Blake Griffin comes from the 2009/10 Panini Absolute Memorabilia Basketball set - the base RC is serial numbered #/499.  These cards feature a sticker autograph and a jersey/ball combination from the NBA Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot.
Once Blake came back from injury in 10/11 and started to put up ESPN highlight dunks night in and night out, his cards started to get hot on eBay. Here at Sports Card Radio we really like Griffin and we think the price for these cards will continue to rise as he gets more exposure around the league.

The only drawbacks for Griffin is of course another bad injury and the fact that he plays for one of the leagues sad sack franchises in the LA Clippers. We saw the career of former #1 overall pick and SCR favorite Michael Olowokandi go down the tubes in L.A. in part because of poor coaching and management. It remains to be seen if that franchise can ever get it together.

RESULTS: Ding! We hit the mark with this one as we predicted this price jump just before the Blake Griffin hype train started to gain momentum. After winning the dunk contest and daily highlights on ESPN, these cards now sell for over $140.00.

Bryce Harper was the #1 overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals but the hype surrounding this young phenom has been building for years. Sports Illustrated featured Harper on the cover of their magazine while he was still in High School, something that has rarely happened in the publications history.  Harper has all the skills you'd want, including incredible power for someone his age.

Topps included a Bryce Harper Aflac All-American Team Autograph card, serial numbered /230, in their 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks & Prospects Set. Sales of the card have been hot upon release of the set on December 15th.

While I've heard that Harper has all the talent in the world, I've also heard he is quite a fan of himself, which is not uncommon for star athletes I suppose. Having success in High School and Junior College is a dime a dozen, very few players go on to reach the MLB and become stars. Prices for his Aflac Autograph are actually not all that bad considering collectors of prospects tend to go overboard when a new player hits the market. If Harper is able to go on and have a great career these cards should be worth quite a bit.

Stephen Strasburg cards are still selling for good money despite having season ending surgery that will keep him out of baseball for at least 18 months. Its not like his career is over by any means, being young and talented I'm sure Strasburg will come back strong.

I remember this time last year seeing most Tim Lincecum Autographs sell for a little less than $100 - after winning 2 Cy Young Awards. Winning the world series, and not having too many current autographs on the market has turned that all around. However Tim Lincecum's World Series Win goes to show you what the market will pay for a top performing pitcher ... even when things are going good.

Basically I think that between $80 - $90 is what the market will pay over time for a top pitching talent not on the Yankees or Red Sox (or other huge market team). Given that even if all goes well Strasburg will be just starting to pitch again this time next year. Not to mention you have Aroldis Chapman, Bryce Harper, even Buster Posey and other SF Giants taking the spotlight (and collectors dollars) away from Strasburg, I have to think his prices will fall. We will also see the release of 2010 Bowman Chrome and 2010 Topps Sterling Baseball, which will flood the market with more Stephen Strasburg 2010 (RC) Cards.

I said on show #65 of The Sports Card Show Podcast that if these are selling for these prices next year, I'll buy 5 boxes of this stuff and give away the cards for free. We'll see if I regret that call!!
