2012 Stockton Ports Roster

2012 Observations:
  • Stassi is still out with his ankle injury Updated 4/29/2012
  • Stassi visited Isleton Elementary School with teammate Ian Krol Updated 4/18/2012
  • Max hurt his ankle on a play at the plate on defense during the 2nd series of the season. He should be back very soon. Updated 4/14/2012
  • Welcome Back to Stockton Max! Updated 4/2/2012

2011 Observations: Stassi got hurt 31 games into the 2011 season and missed the rest of the year with a shoulder injury. You could tell that the injury was hurting him well before he went out of the lineup as he was primarily used as a DH. In total, 2011 was a wash for Max because of the injury. He is one of the most engaging athletes I've ever been around and was the star of the 2011 autograph session before the season. Stassi would talk to fans, flip his glove into the stands and sign hundreds of autographs. Stassi will return to the Stockton Ports to start the 2012 season.

  • Gary Brown - SF Giants
  • Chad Bettis - Colorado Rockies
  • Mark Appel - Stanford
  • Stephen Piscotty - Stanford
  • +MORE+

Living in California has it's perks - one being February baseball and I was fortunate to get to see the #2 rated team in the country, Stanford, play a thrilling extra innings game in Stockton, CA. Projected #1 MLB draft pick Mark Appel did not pitch, but he did sign autographs for fans and I talk about that on the show. Got some good looks at several of Stanford's top hitting prospects, Kenny Diekroeger, Tyler Gaffney, Stephen Piscotty and sophomore Austin Wilson.

Then I blabber on about my opportunities to see San Francisco Giants #1 prospect Gary Brown. He is a center fielder who is one of the fastest players in minor league baseball. Brown hit over .300, stole a ton of bases while leading the San Jose Giants to the best record in all the minors. I was very lucky to watch Brown play in person on a number of occasions and share some insight into his skills. Baseball America rates Brown as the #36 rated prospect in all of baseball.

Finally I wrap up the show by remembering one magical night by Rockies pitching prospect Chad Bettis. On this night it seemed like he struck out every Stockton Ports batter he faced. Baseball America rates Bettis as the #86 rated prospect in all of baseball.

Michael Choice Oakland A's Top Prospect Sports Card Radio
Prospect Podcast Ep #1
Recorded February 18, 2012

Players Talked About In Show:
  • Michael Choice - Oakland A's OF
  • Tony Renda - Univ. Cal Berkley - 2B
  • Tyler Matzek - Colorado Rockies - SP
  • Barry Zito - San Francisco Giants - SP
  • Trevor Bauer - Arizona Diamondbacks - SP

In the very first episode of the Sports Card Radio Prospect Podcast we talk about several of the games top young players. It starts by talking about the opportunity to watch the #91 rated 2012 MLB Draft prospect Tony Renda of the University of California Golden Bears. Renda is a smallish 2B who was the '11 Pac-10 Player of the Year. It was a very impressive batting practice session by Renda as well as 3 hits during the game against the University of the Pacific Tigers.

Next it's all about the 2011 Cal League MVP - Oakland A's top prospect Michael Choice. I saw Michael play over 60 games in person last year and the loud balls off his bat are a sight to see. Finally I get into a couple starts I saw Rockies prospect Tyler Matzek make in early 2011, and compare his warmup routine to Barry Zito and Trevor Bauer.
