Got lots of things to talk about on today’s program. First off is the 2012 NFL Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot. This is always an exciting event to follow because you get to see all kinds of new cards & the rookies seem excited to see themselves on the new cards. The most interesting thing to note is that some of the most popular NFL teams (Bears, Cowboys, Patriots, Packers, Steelers) have ZERO rookies at the premiere – so be careful buying box break spots this year!

One of the interesting thing about everyone being all pumped up about 2012 NFL rookies is that the 2011 rookies were pretty good. Cam Newton, A.J. Green, Julio Jones and Andy Dalton all look like potential stars to me. Not to mention DeMarco Murray, Torrey Smith, Randall Cobb, Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert & others still could evolve into great players. I’ll admit that I don’t care about or really watch college football – but I can’t imagine that this years class will be any better than 2011 was – but Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III might be able to hold up the hobby on their own. The reason why I parallel the two is you want to be careful pre-ordering 2012 product without seeing what 2011 Topps & Panini boxes were going for after all the hype wore off.

2011-12 Panini Contenders Hockey just came out recently, and I think it’s a really tight set that might be good for the single card collector. The patch autograph cards with the silver signatures are really sweet looking, but I can imagine that they might be condition sensitive – so be careful buying these if you care about that.

Boxes MSRP was around $110

You get 18 Packs with 5 Cards per pack

2011-12 Donruss Elite Hockey is a set that came out recently as well – and maybe it’s because I don’t really collect hockey …. but I like this set. The base cards & rookies remind me of the Donruss Elite I collected as a kid. The on-card rookie autographs are really nice cards. The only thing I think this set could use is a few more colors to the parallel cards.

Release Date May 2, 2012

2011-12 Panini Past & Present Basketball is the first set of the year that has redemptions for 11-12 AND 12-13 NBA rookies! The autograph versions have been flying out the door on eBay and I can imagine that the top rookies will be very valuable. I don’t believe you will get these back until the next NBA season starts, and also I’m not sure the order is (or what player you get for each redemption is certain) so be careful when buying these if you can’t risk loosing the money.

The 12/13 redemptions are a great addition – and should be included in late/post season product to help boost sales. They should have some parallels like Topps Finest did though.
