2011 NFL Rookie Photo Shoot |
One of the most important events every year for top sports card manufactures is the Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot that brings together the most marketable incoming NFL Rookies. This is where companies like Topps and Panini can obtain virtually every autograph and player worn jersey for every set that will be released in 2011. If you pull an autograph or jersey card of one of the 36 NFL Rookies listed below in 2011 - chances are it was obtained at this event held in Los Angeles in late May. Thanks to the advent of social networking, I was able to compile most of these pictures shown below from Twitter accounts of some of the players at the event. It is an exciting day for the rookies themselves and some take great pride seeing their cards for the very first time. Starting on Wednesday May 18 - the 36 rookies will be photographed and will sign autographs in a process that takes 3 days. On Friday May 20th, 12 of the rookies including Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, A.J. Green, and Von Miller will be at the Best Buy electronics store in West L.A. to sign autographs for fans. Saturday May 21 is a big day as a photo shoot will take place in the Los Angeles Coliseum and many of those photos will be featured on cardboard come Fall. The NFL Rookies will wear their new uniforms and will take action shots for Topps and Panini America. Topps is famous for having Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot Autographs in some of their flagship products so look for that to continue in 2011. |

Collectors Universe CLCT Post Record Quarter For Shareholders
Taking a look at the balance sheet, the company has a large 21+ Million dollar cash bankroll, and less than $10 million in current liabilities. The large cash balance might have to do with the large dividend, which is paid quarterly at $0.325 per share. For those of you not familiar with how dividends work, the company basically pays you $0.325 per share, each quarter (every 3 months). So for example, today CLCT closed at $15.57 per share - if I owned 10 shares (10 x $15.57 = $155.70) Collectors universe would send me $3.25 (or 10 x $0.325) every 3 months. Most investors re-invest dividends, so in this example I would buy $3.25 worth of stock instead of taking it in cash - which would be good for about 1/3 of a share each quarter. The company also has roughly $3.7 million allocated to a Share Buy-Back, which is basically the company reducing the number outstanding shares. However, the company has not purchased shares since 2008 - which was when shares were under $5. The dividend, and continued growth in the gold/silver coin grading should help continue to raise the stock price over time. If the company decides to execute the remaining buy-back monies, it should also mean good things for investors in the future. |

The Topps Company will spend $1.6 Million advertising and marketing the Attax trading card game in the U.S. which it relies on to be a cash cow for its business. According to a March 2010 Wall Street Journal article Topps Attax accounts for 25% of revenue and profits for the legendary trading card company. In the United States, Baseball (MLB), Football (NFL) and Wrestling (WWE) all have products available at just about every large retail establishment that sells cards - including Target and WalMart. This marketing grid is only applicable for the U.S. because Topps does release a popular line of Attax Soccer cards abroad. Numbers are in tens of thousands. ie: 20 = $20,000 Total Marketing $$$ = $1.6 Million
