Top 10 Hottest Cards
-Baseball Cards on eBay –
June 2010

1 – 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Superfractor 1/1 ~ Last Month (1)

Wait?? How is a 1/1 card the hottest card for the second month in a row? That’s because the card was re-sold on eBay in June ………. for more then what it sold for last month……… Wow…….. Not only that, after Robert Power purchased the 2010 Bowman Chrome Stephen Strasburg Superfractor 1/1 in May for $16,403.00, he went on a media tour which included an interview with Beckett Magazine and an appearance on ESPN First Take. The card was then sent into BGS to be graded and received a very *cough* generous grade of 9.5. Notice on the picture of the card I have on the right – Beckett even watermarked the photo for Power to use in his auction description.

On June 28 the Strasburg Superfractor 1/1 was sold for $25,000 – a very tidy profit as well as some great publicity for Robert Power himself and the hobby as a whole. It’s hard to think of a modern day baseball card that has gotten so much national attention. Regardless of how Strasburg’s career ends up, the remarkable selling prices for his rookie cards will be talked about for many years to come.

Obvious choice here. There are a lot of new and old collectors who are seeing what the prices are for the Superfractor and other high end Strasburg RC’s and they are trying to scoop up as many of the lower priced cards as they can.

3 – Bryce Harper Team USA Cards ~ Last Month (5)

When Bryce Harper appeared for Team USA, it allowed Upper Deck and Topps to produce USA cards featuring the Nationals #1 pick. In 2009 Upper Deck released a USA set, and then Topps got the exclusive license to produce the USA in 2010. Thus, collectors are treated to early cards of Harper before he even was drafted #1 by the Washington Nationals in the 2010 MLB Draft.

Harper still has to sign a contract, and could go back to Junior College if he wanted to. That is highly unlikely as Nationals executives have to be drooling at the thought of a Harper/Strasburg led franchise. Despite being a catcher for most of his career, Harper will likely play the outfield so that his legs won’t have to take a beating and his bat will be best utilized.

4 – 2010 Bowman Baseball ~ Last Month (3)

With how hot the Strasburg Superfractor got, many people were scrambling to buy boxes and packs at both the hobby and retail level to get a piece of the action. 2010 Bowman Baseball Retail boxes could be purchased at Walmart and Target and then re-sold on eBay for a profit. Pre-sale hobby box prices were $75, in late June the Bowman box prices were close to $200 when shipping was included.

5 – 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Red Autograph 1/1 ~ Last Month (NR)

This would have easily been the #1 card this month had it not been pulled off eBay in the final days while it was at auction on eBay. The buzz around the card was electric, and bidding at one point topped $1 million. By the time the seller had set up pre-approved bidding with eBay, the price dropped in half, but equally mind boggling nonetheless.

The card will now be put up for auction by Huggins & Scott Auctions in Silver Spring, Md. According to WTOP, a Washington Radio Station, the card will be sold very soon.

“The (seller) contacted us over the weekend and he’s decided to include it in our July auction,” says Bill Huggins, of Huggins & Scott Auctions in Silver Spring, Md. “It has some significant value, 25K maybe $50,000.”

6 – Ubaldo Jimenez Rookie Cards ~ Last Month (7)

In a normal year, Ubaldo might rank much higher on these hot lists. But with Stephen Strasburg dominating the top spots for the near future, Ubaldo Jimenez has flown under the hobby radar somewhat despite incredible pitching numbers.

He has already thrown a no-hitter this season, and sports a league leading 1.83 ERA in a Colorado ballpark that is supposed to be hitter friendly. His 14-1 record makes him a lock to make the NL All-Star team and he is the runaway favorite for the Cy Young award. While collectors are distracted by Strasburg Mania, Jimenez has been the games best pitcher.

7 – 2010 Topps Series 2 Stephen Strasburg #661 Redemption ~ Last Month (NR)

Riding the Stephen Strasburg gravy train – Topps announced effective June 8, 2010 that collectors have a chance to redeem Million Card Redemption codes for a special Stephen Strasburg (RC) Logo Card featuring a photo of him in his 1st MLB game. The card has been added to the 2010 Topps Series 2 Base Set as card #661 – and set collectors will want to hunt this one down if you want a ‘complete’ set.

These cards are very short printed and early sales have been in the $600-900 range.

8 – 2010 Bowman Chrome Jason Heyward Superfractor Auto 1/1 ~ Last Month (NR)

Jason Heyward Superfractor Auction Stats
Watchers: 1,076
Final Price: $6,156.00

According to Blowout Cards, the 2010 Bowman Chrome Jason Heyward Superfractor 1/1 was pulled from a box purchased from them. With the attention the Stephen Strasburg Superfractor 1/1 got, the final price of $6,156.00 seems like a bargain. The 1,000 + watchers made it the most watched trading card currently on eBay at the time.

9 – 2010 Bowman Chrome Manny Machado USA Superfractor 1/1~ Last Month (NR)

Manny Machado was the 3rd overall pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2010 MLB Draft. He is a talanted SS/3B and has been compared to NY Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.

Like Bryce Harper, Machado played on Team USA and that allows Topps to produce cards before he was drafted and insert them into a licensed MLB trading card set. The Superfractor 1/1 is the most sought after parallel card, and the Machado card was sold during the week of the MLB Draft.

Final Price: $1,225.00

10 – 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg RED Parallel RC 1/1 ~ Last Month (NR)

This is the “un-autographed” red parallel. It was for sale at the beginning of the month and generated significant buzz, but the bidding stalled out in the final days of the auction. The card ended before Strasburg made his MLB debut with the Nationals. It would be interesting to see what the card would sell for today, especially considering the hype surrounding Strasburg’s other high end cards.

Watchers: 1,033
Final Price: $4,850.00

Dropped Out:

  • Jason Heyward Rookie Cards (4)
  • Starlin Castro 2009 Bowman Rookie Card (6)
