2011 Panini Prestige Football Checklist
Panini America Knights Lance Blog
The ongoing NFL lockout has not stopped Panini America from releasing the first fully licensed cards to hit stores in 2011. Panini Prestige is a mid-priced product that features players who were recently selected at the 2011 NFL Draft. Collectors will have to wait until June for sets that picture rookies in their new NFL uniforms, as the Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot took place well after these cards were in production. It must have been quite a challenge to track down these soon-to-be NFL rookies and obtain signatures but Panini did a good job getting some key players. Mark Ingram and #1 overall pick Cam Newton notably do not have autographs in Prestige. Perhaps both players were seeking more money for their autograph services than Panini was willing to pay. Both Newton and Ingram have since signed an autograph deal with Panini where signed cards of those superstars will be in just about every Panini set that will release in 2011.
One thing about Prestige that makes it unique is that many of the new rookies who have autographs in this set may not have very many autographs again in 2011. Many late round picks or un-drafted free agents do not get inserted into later sets as companies like Panini tend to focus on rookies who can generate buzz on the field early in their career. The autograph rookie we pulled of former LSU WR Terrence Toliver might end up being one of his few auto’s made in 2011 and could be a key rookie card if he ever can stick in the league. There are many examples of players like Toliver who will have an autograph card in Prestige, but may not have very many other rookies during 2011 unless they preform quickly on the the field early in their rookie season. It certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea to stock up on autographs of players like Toliver if you think they have a shot to make it in the NFL.

Dez Bryant Base Card #52
One of the things I look forward to with each new year – are the 2nd year base cards of players like Dez Bryant, Tim Tebow and C.J. Spiller among others. Sports Card Radio Fan Forum Member redman5422 will take home this beauty because he said in our contest thread “I collect a lot of football and Dez Bryant.”
Panini’s Hobby Marketing Manager Tracy Hackler is a big Denver Broncos fan and we pulled several nice cards including a rookie card of #2 overall pick Von Miller. Fan Forum members HeltonFan17 and JKBBall just so happen to be big Bronco as well fans and I split up the eight cards we got into stacks of four each for them to enjoy. The Broncos have a new coach and it will be very interesting to see if Tim Tebow gets a shot to be the starting QB in Denver. Last season, Tebow played well down the stretch and WR Brandon Lloyd rekindled his career with 1,448 yards and 11 TD’s. Areas of improvement need to be made on defense as they continued to be one of the worst teams in that regard in 2010. Hopefully #2 overall pick Von Miller can help the linebacker group that couldn’t stop running backs all last season.

2011 Panini Prestige Rookie Review
Gerald McCoy Prime Jersey #17
I’m a fan of the rookie review set that features 40 rookies from last season as well as parallels with autographs and event used jerseys. Hey, if you’ve got left over material from the 2010 Rookie Premiere Shoot why not let collectors get a piece right? While McCoy might not be the best guy to pull from this set, don’t tell forum member Beard_Face_Bo that’s because he is a big Buccaneers fan and will take home this card.
2011 Panini Prestige Rookie Autographs
Delone Carter Autograph #359/599
Carter was selected in the 4th round by the Indianapolis Colts and we were very excited to pull this card because he could be a player who makes a quick impact in 2011. The Colts are starving for a good RB and Carter maybe that guy. Won by forum member Pnizzle who is a big Colts fan.
2011 Panini Prestige Sp Rookies
A.J. Green Sp Variation Rookie #201
Inside boxes of 2011 Prestige you should find about 1 Sp Variation Rookie and we pulled a good one in Bengals new stud WR A.J. Green. The Sp cards are of 2011 rookies holding up their new NFL jersey on draft night. I noticed that other Sp Variation A.J. Green cards was selling for around $10 on the secondary market which is good money considering his autographs were selling for less then $35.
2011 Panini Prestige Rookies
Akeem Ayers Purple Xtra Points #3/50
Keep an eye out for the xtra points parallel cards inserted randomly into packs – both veteran and rookie players have serial numbered parallels. This Akeem Ayers card is purple #/50 and we also pulled 3 other light blue /999 rookie parallels.

5 Winners – Thank You Tri-City Sports PL
It is always a great treat to open a box when you have no idea what will be inside. This new product from Tri-City Sports PL has at least one graded card by PSA or BGS per pack – and as you can see from this box break video – there are also many other surprises in store. One of the owners of the company was nice enough to join us on Show #74 to talk about the product and he said if you like to gamble – this is the product for you.
Indeed not all boxes will be true winners like this one – but several huge cards exist and are worth thousands on the secondary market. Cards such as a 2005 Sp Authentic Patch Autograph Aaron Rodgers, 1957 Topps Bart Starr RC PSA 6, and a 2001 SPA Michael Vick Rookie Autograph just to name a few. Check out Tri-City Sports PL official website for all the information on the set.

A Legend Box Topper/Pack would be cool
The RC class never caught fire during season
Colorful base cards don’t represent ‘classic
I’ve made no secret about this being my favorite basketball set from Panini to collect on my Podcast. Sure I’d like to buy National Treasures and this years 10-11 Gold Standard, but on a limited budget, those sets are usually out of reach for me. Panini Classics brings you the best of both worlds. On-Card autographs of all the top NBA rookies, and NBA superstars like Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose … at an affordable price. While you won’t find the huge patches and big checklists in a set like this – the clean autographs are about as good as it gets.
Being ‘Classics’ I kind of expected Panini to go with a more black/white type approach with the design (kind of like last year). However, the base cards are bold and colorful – and may not fit the classics theme as well as last years base cards might have. I’d like to have this set feel ‘old’ when you open it, since it is Classics … and basketball is lacking that throwback type set.
That being said, the design of the cards doesn’t take away from the quality that I always seem to get from Panini boxes. Corners & Edges are sharp, even on the on-card autograph rookie cards … which I’m sure have been handled by multiple people before landing in packs. This set did get a nice make-over from the previous year, but we do see some nice sets carry over including Dress Code, Classic Greats, Classic Combos and Blast From the Past. You do get 3 more cards than last year in a Hobby pack, and the stated odds are 2 Autographs (At least 1 RC) and 2 Memorabilia Jersey Cards per hobby box … all for the same SRP as last year. Given that 2010/11 Panini Contenders Patches went away from the on-card autograph model, Panini Classics is one of the best choices for basketball collectors like myself who like on-card autograph RC cards at an affordable price. That being said, if anyone in this RC class starts playing like Blake Griffin did in 2010/11 … these boxes won’t be affordable for long.
The only real problem I have with this set, is it makes a 29 year old guy feel old!!! 🙂 I remember collecting Glenn Robinson RC cards, now he’s in the Legends Set!!!

If 2009/10 is any indication on what might happen to this years Absolute Basketball set – good things are in the cards. Blake Griffin really took the NBA by storm one year after being drafted by the Clippers with the #1 pick. Before Griffin’s NBA debut this season, boxes of 09/10 Absolute were selling for far less. However, this goes to show you the power 1 player can have in driving up the value in box sales – let alone multiple players.
2010/11 Absolute didn’t even have a rookie as hot as Tyreke Evans was last season – so it took a little extra to get collectors interest this time around. The best thing about 10/11 Absolute is that it was the very first set to include Kevin Durant Autograph Cards within a Panini Basketball release!! That alone will help re-sale and box price values despite a RC class that played second fiddle to Blake Griffin all season long.
As we’ve seen with all 2009/10 Panini Basketball boxes (they’ve gone up in price – often WAY over MSRP) That means that there is nothing holding the 10/11 version from doing the same. The NBA in general is a tough league to break into. For the most part, the NBA has been built around Kobe, LeBron, Shaq, D-Wade, Carmelo, and a handful of other players since Michael Jordan retired for the 3rd time. Blake Griffin is pretty rare, but it doesn’t mean John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and others can’t become NBA superstars as well in year 2 or 3.

2010-11 Panini NBA Stickers
Pack Break Date: April 12, 2011
NBA Sticker Pack – $1.00 at Target
NBA Sticker Album – $2.00 at Target
This is clearly one of the best values at the retail level because you can walk away with a sticker album – which includes 6 stickers – for $2.00 and a pack of 8 stickers for only $1.00. For $3.00 total you could have fun putting together your collection and checking out the stats of your favorite players. There are over 375 stickers in the entire set so it would take you a fair amount of time to complete the set if you are trying to accomplish that task.
About 8 players from each team have individual stickers and many other types of stickers are available as well including: Team Logos, Finals and All-Star Game Logos, Kobe Bryant Finals Match-Up stickers and many more. If you enjoy cards and stickers these are a must. Even if you don’t pick up the album, 8 stickers for $1.00 is hard to beat!
