Sports Card Survey – October 2017

Results to our October sports card survey. Depending how respondents answered certain questions, not everyone saw the same survey.

Question 1: This one set up some subsequent questions. I wanted to filter out respondents who purchase boxes online and those who don't.


Question 2: In a short time, I'm sure there will be other sports card surveys that pat the industry on the back with "Best of 2017" type questions. But I wanted to know who respondents thought was the worst online box seller.

Only respondents who answered YES to question 1 saw question 2.


Question 3: Online box seller Blowout Cards was hacked in early 2017. 

Only respondents who answered YES to question 1 saw question 3.


Question 4: Not everyone saw this question, and I'm surprised respondents who buy boxes online don't buy into more breaks.

Only respondents who answered YES to question 1 saw question 4.


Question 5: Might as well ask those that do buy into group breaks who their favorite Group Breaker is.

Only respondents who answered YES to question 1 and 4 saw question 5.


Question 6: Beckett recently fired all their sports magazine editors. I actually think the % who say they subscribe is a good number for a print magazine.

Question 7: Despite the push for more expensive products, most of the respondents don't spend that much per month on sports cards.

Question 8: Every card company claims to be #1, but Topps dominates the respondents to this survey.

Question 9: Topps has women in social media roles. The other companies are dominated by men. Perhaps Upper Deck, Panini and Leaf should lose the grumpy old men who run their social media accounts and reach more female collectors. 

In hindsight I would of first asked if the respondent was male or female and then asked this question.

Question 10: I wanted to see what social media platform they liked the best so that I can adjust my advertising budget.

  • I HATE social media. Maybe I’m getting old, but all of the serious collectors that I know and deal with are over 40. Everything you need to know is on a legitimate website or on You Tube (breaks).

    Twitter is for TWITS!! 12-15 year olds and morons.

    Facebook collects too much personal info. Matter-of-fact, so does Google Chrome. Avoid it like the plague.
