Francisco Peguero is a player who can do a little bit of everything.  His best tools are his speed and ability to hit for average.  His speed helps tremendously in the outfield where he typically plays CF or RF.  Peguero steps up to bat ready to hit and has above average power for a guy his size - 5-11' - 190 llbs.  During the 2009 and 2010 seasons he hit over .325 at the lower levels of the minor leagues for the Giants and Baseball America rated him the #4 prospect in the organization to start 2011.  Peguero was hurt to start the season and that kept him out until June.  I finally got a chance to see Peguero play during his first few games back in '11 at the Single A affiliate of the Giants - San Jose.  His speed is noticeable - and he can beat out hits that players with average to above average speed cannot. Peguero isn't the biggest guy in the world - but he makes loud contact - and I saw him hit a deep HR that was a no-doubter off his bat. In the outfield he didn't have much of a problem but I did notice he took a couple funny routes to balls - and there are some in the organization that think he is better served in RF.

Where Peguero ends up by the end of June is anyone's guess.  He has not ever played at AA or higher, but I almost think the Giants might skip AA with him and let him go straight to AAA Fresno. In over 1,600 AB's in 5+ minor league seasons he has a career average of .312.  He is still only 23 years old and I guess there is an outside chance he makes it all the way to San Francisco in 2011 as a September call-up.  Expect Peguero to compete for the CF or RF job in S.F. in 2012 or 2013.  The Giants have another speedy CF top prospect in Gary Brown - so they might work in Peguero at multiple OF spots as Brown profiles more as a true CF.

2010 Bowman Chrome Baseball featured prospect cards and autographs of the budding Giants star and prices have been modest in 2011 because of his injury. Now that he is healthy and could potentially move up the farm system quickly - expect savvy Giants fans to purchase their fair share of Peguero cards as he will most certainly get a shot to play in the big leagues at some point sooner rather than later.
